Sequels in the pipeline for Spider-Man reboot

Posted On » July 11 - 17, 2012 (Volume:10 / Issue 80)

Mark Webb’s reboot, The Amazing Spider-Man, not only exceeded expectations, breaking US box-office records, but it is also rewarded Sony and Columbia Pictures with a new Spidey trilogy.

Sony Pictures announced last week, through the film’s official Facebook page, that the franchise will expand beyond the first film as well as revealing plans to star Andrew Garfield as the web-slinger for another two movies.

Despite predictions that it might struggle to compete with rival superhero flicks like The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises, the movie earned $35 million on its opening day, leaving enough cliff hangers and unanswered questions to develop further.

Director Marc Webb, who is not yet confirmed for the follow-up films, said: “These movies typically have a life beyond a single movie. Obviously, there’s a narrative obligation to tie things up and a certain pressure to tie up all the loose ends. But I feel like, why not dance with the idea that there’s going to be a larger story?”

Web of intrigue

Apart from brand milking the reboot of the franchise, The Amazing Spider-Man is probably the most unnecessary movie of the year.
